It took me about 2 months to plateau learning. However I already play a bunch of other stringed instruments and piano, so it was less of learning music/theory and more of transferring what I know to guitar.
Learning to be a musician requires a lot of work but it is very much worth it. So even if it takes you more time (or less time) to become proficient than another person you should never get discouraged. Also, since you can never fully understand an instrument, we are all really just at different levels of beginner. Proficiency at an instrument is the point when you can begin to hide your mistakes and better portray your art to others.
The background theory knowledge that you will get here is invaluable, but without applying it to actual practice of the guitar, you will not be better at guitar.
What is your music theory background? If you understand the circle of fifths and how many semitones are in the different scales, you will learn a lot faster. If not I can point out some good resources and give some tips.
Hope this helps, feel free to ask me if you have any questions.
