Let's kick off another diamond discussion. The term hand yoga or finger yoga was mentioned in the Junior guitar course. I'd like to expand on this somewhat overlooked topic and ask you - how are you taking care of your hands and/or fingers? Do you workout, stretch, or just play the instrument?
I am asking because I spent like last three months training fingerstyle exclusively to the point that my hands and forearms are cramping like crazy after every training session. Grip is not the issue and my flexibility is also very good so I decided to buy the gadget on the picture to strenghten the 'opposite' side of the hand if it makes sense. But I am lazy and I know it will sooner or later end up in the drawer with other junk 😅.
I've seen a few things on guitar yoga recently. If you google guitar yoga you will find a lot of stuff (I can't tell you if it's good or not, as I haven't tried it.) However, I have arthritis in various parts of my body plus carpal tunnel/RSI, so I do a lot of exercises for that.
That is actually a perfect tip, Bartosz. I do a fair bit of calisthenics myself. Solid grip and stretched muscles helps a lot. From fretting to minimizing back pain when playing some long gig 😄.
As a pianist, I have really exercised my fingers and because of Hanon has built up my dexterity. I also like rock climbing @Bartosz Samitowski and dead hanging.
I think one thing that can help especially for fingerstyle is guaranteeing that your posture and positioning of the guitar is impeccable. Especially classical guitarists have a really good position for this. Because at some point you can have strong and dexterous fingers, but if you are not in a good position you can get tired a lot faster, and could cause injury.
Cuantas never say that again! You have a firm spot in the OG GuitarGym gang! 🤘 Sorry for bringing up up such a geek topic 😅. It is just something that clearly limits my progress at the moment 🙃.
Benjamin thanks for that input. I don't play classical at all but I started with classical training - guitar resting on left leg, raised on a guitar stool, very rigid fretting technique. Now I have a teacher with quite the opposite approach - do whatever as long as you are comfortable, no stress or tension. And he is like a god tier guitarist and violinist. So yeah that is what I am trying to do. Btw. I did not anticipate seeing dead hangs recommendation on Guitar related thread 😅 nice 🤘
